Reading Level Assessment Program

Star Reading is a reading level assessment solution used by over 34,000 schools in the US for K-12th grade students. Our program has met the highest review standards by several prestigious education organizations such as the National Center on Intensive Intervention, National Center on Response to Intervention, and more. Renaissance’s research base—consisting of over 430 studies—is unmatched by other edtech companies, and its research papers have proven the accuracy and reliability of the evaluation and are widely used in English reading education in the U.S. It records more than 70 million tests a year and accumulates vast amounts of data over the years. Star Reading diagnoses students’ reading levels based on U.S. standard school age values.

Star Reading

Valid and accurate
with Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) system

Star Reading is a computer-adaptive test that measures student
achievement on reading skills. As a student takes the assessment, the
software selects items based on the student’s responses.

On average, it takes about 15 minutes to complete the test, and students can compare their reading level in
comparison to students in the US in real-time.

  • over 5,000 questions in the question bank
  • 15 minutes of testing time on average
  • 34 question items based on student’s level of responses

Recommends level-appropriate books
for individualized learning

The GE index, which represents student’s reading ability,
allows students to easily choose or recommend books that suit their level.

Lexile level is also provided alongisde the GE level.

Subdivided Assessment Domain

Star Reading developed identifying the set of skills to be assessed.
It has been broken down to 36 reading skills from 5 main domains.

  • Word Knowledge and Skill

    Star Reading measures students’ knowledge
    and understanding of vocabulary,
as well as their ability to apply vocabulary strategies.

  • Comprehension Strategies
    and Constructing Meaning

Short passages ask students to use strategies
    such as self-monitoring, making predictions,
drawing conclusions, and using the organizational
structure of the text to improve understanding.

  • Analyzing Literary Text

Students are asked to explore the plot, setting,
character, theme, and point of view in literary text,
as well as the characteristics of different genres.

  • Understanding Author’s Craft

    Star Reading measures students’ understanding
and analysis of an author’s use of language
and literary devices to create certain effects.

  • Analyzing Argument and Evaluating Text

These items ask students to recognize, analyze,
    and evaluate arguments in persuasive,
    editorial, and academic writing.

Set personalized learning goals
and support learning management

You can set learning goals that fit your reading level and manage them
to achieve them with periodic assessments.
Star Reading provides 30 types of reports and helps facilitate
learning management and counseling through digitized data.

Provide instructional guides
by level and reading area

After taking the Star Reading, detailed reports are provided on the skills students need in each reading area,
and these materials can be used as a guideline for your class.

Reports

Star Reading provides 30 reports that show level diagnosis and growth figures.

  • Diagnostic Report

Star Reading allows you to check the reading level (GE index) of diagnosed students, and provides scores and percentages for each evaluation area. Use this report as a guide to help students set their reading goals and improve their academic performance.

  • Student Progress Monitoring Report

Through the data recorded while regularly taking the Star Reading assessment, you can see the student’s reading level (GE index) and the process of growth change in charts and figures. You can check the report, check if it reaches the reading goal, and provide the student with the necessary guide.

Scores

Reading Level (GE) Related Scores Used in Key Reports

1SS (Scaled Score)

2PR (Percentile Rank)

3GE (Grade Equivalent)

4IRL (Instructional Reading Level)

5ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development)

  • 1SS (Scaled Score)

A scaled score is calculated based on the difficulty of questions and the number of correct responses.

Scaled scores can be used to compare student performance across grade levels.

It serves as the foundational index for SR data.

    Range :
    - Star Reading 600-1400
    - Star Early Literacy 200-1100

    SR 600 1400

    SEL 200 1100

    SR 600 1400

    SEL 200 1100

  • 2PR (Percentile Rank)

Percentile Rank scores range from 1 to 99 and express student ability relative to the scores of other students in the same grade.

For example, if a reading assessment gave a student a Percentile Rank of 43, the student's reading skills are greater than 43% of other children in the same grade.

  • 3GE (Grade Equivalent)

A norm-referenced score that represents how a student’s test performance compares with other students nationally.

Grade Equivalents range from 0.0–12.9+. The minimum GE score is 0, shown as either 0 or < K; values below 0 are shown as < K.

For example, GE of 3.3 refers to the typical reading ability of students in the 3th month of 3rd grade based on the U.S. grade-level standard.

  • 4IRL (Instructional Reading Level)

The IRL (Instructional Reading Level) is a criterion-referenced score indicating the highest reading level at which a student is 80% proficient or higher in comprehending material with assistance.

For example, an IRL of 3.1 suggests the student can recognize 90-98% of the words and comprehend 80% of the text typically expected of students in the 1st month of 3rd grade.

Educators use the IRL to determine the appropriate level of instructional materials for effective classroom instruction.

  • 5ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development)

The ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) represents the range of book difficulty levels where students can achieve optimal reading outcomes. By reading books within their ZPD, students can maximize the effectiveness of their reading. The ZPD, calculated from the reading level diagnosed by Star Reading, helps students select books that are neither too easy nor too difficult, ensuring an appropriate reading level for their development.
