Characteristics
Book Level Index
In order to create a successful reading habit, it is important to select books that fit student’s reading level and interests. The three indices below are
Renaissance Learning’s representative book indices for effective English reading.
ATOS
Book Level Index,
which combines the average length of a sentence, word length,
vocabulary level, and number of words
Point
Points assigned to the book
by the length and difficulty of the book
Interest level
an index indicating
whether the subject and idea
of a book are appropriate for each age group
ATOS Book Level
ATOS is a measure of readability—in other words, a readability formula designed to guide students to
appropriate-level books. ATOS takes into account the most important predictors of text complexity—
average sentence length, average word length, and word difficulty level.
Interest Level (Age-appropriate Level)
It is an index that indicates whether the subject and idea of the book are appropriate for each age group.
Along with the ATOS index, you can select books by considering the Interest Level and guide students to
enjoy reading with more suitable books.
| Interest Level | Grade Appropriateness |
|---|---|
| LG | Lower Grades – Kinder~G3 |
| MG | Middle Grades – G4~G8 |
| MG+ | Middle Grades Plus – G6+ |
| UG | Upper Grades – G9~G12 |
Point
All books that provide AR quizzes are given points according to the length and difficulty of the book.
Points can be earned according to the correct answer rate of the quiz, and students will be motivated to
continue reading activities. Points can continue to accumulate and be used to manage students’ reading
activities.
